Barton Malow has continued to be instrumental in helping students to plan their future careers and have also introduced students to career opportunities in construction. We are still working hard to do more, but are pleased at the recognition we have received for our past and present efforts in helping youth to “build brighter futures.”

Detroit Public Schools Program Manager Team, LLC
Workforce and Career Enhancement Program

  

This award was received for the Detroit Public Schools Program Manager Team (DPSPMT), LLC - Workforce and Career Enhancement (WACE) Program. Barton Malow Company is one of the companies that make up the LLC. The WACE program is a pre-apprenticeship program that was developed to provide Detroit Pubic School youth with an opportunity to gain significant paid work experiences on major construction projects for the Detroit Public Schools. One hundred percent (100%) of the students participating in the program were / are minority. Program participants are 98% African Americans and 2% Hispanic. Typical focus areas include construction management, architecture, engineering, accounting, Computer Aided Drafting, plumbing, masonry, carpentry and many other apprentice-related trades. Barton Malow Company has employees who have been dedicated to providing the coordination of the Workforce and Career Enhancement (WACE) program under the DPSPMT, LLC.

 

2002 YMCA Leo B. Marsh Corporate Citizen Award... details

Barton Malow Company received this award for outstanding company involvement with the YMCA Minority Achievers Program. Dr. Leo B. Marsh established the YMCA’s Black Achievers Program in 1971 at the Harlem Branch YMCA in New York City. It’s primary goals were to motivate minority youth toward setting and achieving high educational and career goals, to recognize adults who serve as role models for young people and to raise funds for support of YMCA programs.

Barton Malow Company has had many employees donate countless hours of time and talent to the YMCA Minority Achievers Program. This program links positive adult role models with Detroit area youth to aid them in 1) understanding the connection between academic, technological, social and community achievement and their ability to secure professional, productive employment in the future, and 2) exploring a variety of career paths and essential professional and personal skills and attributes needed to succeed in selected career areas...

 

YMCA Minority Achiever Volunteers... details

 

Robert Williams
Architect, 2003/2004 Carrie Terrell Volunteer Award Recipient. This award is named after the program founder’s premiere volunteers in the first Black Achievers Program at the Harlem YMCA. He donated countless hours of time and talent working with youth and serving as a role model. Barton Malow employee, Robert Williams far exceeded his volunteer expectations and will continue in the program for an additional year.

2002 Gender and Race Diversification Excellence (GARDE) Award... details

This award was also for the Detroit Public Schools Program Manager Team (DPSPMT, LLC) for the administration of the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for construction and renovation of several schools and other DPS facilities through the voter-approved 1994 $1.5-billion bond initiative.  This major undertaking afforded the DPSPMT, LLC an unprecedented opportunity to provide minority and women students with valuable work experience at every level.

This DPSPMT, LLC took a three-pronged approach: workforce diversity through 1) student programs, 2) on-site labor and 3) project management.  The staff orchestrating the DPSPMT, LLC program(s) consisted of 55% minority and 44% female.  The student programs developed through the LLC consisted of all minority students and 2 females.  The experience gained through the CIP and DPSPMT, LLC continues to prepare numerous individuals for rewarding careers in the construction trades.

 

2000 Detroit Regional Chamber... details

Business Education Partnership Excellence Award

Barton Malow Company received this award for their involvement in the, “Building Better Neighborhoods… one Home at a Time” program offered at A. Philip Randolph Career and Technical Center. The program united staff, students and local construction companies in their endeavor to “Build a Better Neighborhood” by replacing one old house with one new one, on Strathmoor Street in Detroit. The students were involved in both the design and construction of the house Barton Malow employees offered supervision to the students and also served as a corporate sponsor of the project. The Strathmoor House project allowed the students to put their training to work through this cooperative teaching and learning initiative. A Philip Randolph Career and Technical Center offers career training that awards students credits toward high school graduation and the skills necessary for employment after graduation.
