DaimlerChrysler
Proving Grounds

Wittman, Arizona

Out-of-control gas prices and air pollution: We know the problems. With the new electric vehicle lab on its Arizona Proving Grounds, DaimlerChrysler is aggressively seeking a solution. Barton Malow served as design/builder on this facility.

Electric Powered Interurban Commuter (EPIC) minivans, DCX’s second generation of electric vehicles and fourth generation of battery technology, are tested here. A special feature of the lab – the custom electric distribution system that fuels the vehicles with electricity – was designed jointly by Barton Malow and Arizona Power Service. It was a proud moment when the EPIC van was chosen as part of the commuter van fleet at Los Angeles International Airport.

The test facility program included the 6,000 sf lab addition and a 1,000 sf, 50-ton capacity central chiller plant. The high-quality working environment was well received by lab engineers and mechanics.
