Fletcher Allen Health Care / University of Vermont
Renaissance Project
Burlington, Vermont

The work included an ambulatory center, education center, 1200-car underground garage with treed plaza at ground level, road relocations, and a new central power plant.

Vermont recently passed a stringent green law to protect both the neighborhood and the environment in general. It required what our client called “quality of process,” and affected virtually every aspect of the project: We washed down vehicles as they left the site, made extensive soil stabilization efforts to control erosion and protect the streets below the site from runoff. We used recycled materials; and priced locally manufactured products for use in the complex.

At project inception, we analyzed the month-to-month labor requirements. That led to creation of a new phasing plan, to permit a cash flow and schedule more favorable to our client. Bid packages were tailored to meet the organization and capability of the local trades market. Still, with 400+ subcontractors on site at any one time, the project pulled trades from all the New England states and Quebec. We employed French and Spanish translators on site for this trilingual workforce, to ensure communication is clear and everyone felt a part of the team.
